My dial for defrost and where the air goes turns real easy and will not change at all how do i fix this?

i have a 2000 ford focus and I cannot get the air to change from the feet to anything else. When I change it it moves on the dial, but it does not change where it comes from. How do i fix this any help would be greatly appreciated.
