Screw driven Garage Door opener that stops?

We live in Colorado and when it gets cold the door will open by a foot and then stop, as if bound up. this has happened before and I've applied WD40 twice over the past few years but am wondering if I should be cleaning the screw rather than adding lubricants? Right now the only way the door opens is manually, and would like to get it back to working automatically.
