Sudden failure of eyesight in children, what could be possible causes?

My niece just today suddenly yelled she cannot see, was brought to hosp wherein doctors could only point to a possible virus, as the cause for her sudden blindness. I think she was given antibiotics, as of now could see but could not identify colors yet. she's 6, normal kid. could it be airborne virus? or whatever?
