Why not just ask him? Just call him up and ask him how he feels about you. IF your looking for alternatives , maybe a note? Also, you said you could get a male friend to help you? That can look so suspicious and cowardly and he'd probably put 2 and 2 together if one of your friends was asking about you to him.
